The City Room blog at NYT just wrote about the release of ExitStrategy, a $2 app that guides subway riders where to stand for quick platform travel to transfers and exits. The developers are touting that this costs less than a MetroCard but, after trying it earlier today, it’s more agreeable at the 99-cent level, if it ever makes it to that price.
Why? While the app is certainly helpful (and more importantly, correct) from what I saw today, it’s more akin to a cheap pamphlet than an app. It loses its value rapidly once you learn your most common transfers.
But then again I wouldn’t trust a printed version of this being sold by some dude at the turnstile for a dollar. This startup knows a simulcast release for BlackBerry, iPhone and Kindle is the way to sell trinkets now.
